Your NHS Heart Health Check

A free check for patients aged 35–60 as part of a new NHS Scotland service to prevent heart disease and stroke.

Why am I invited?

You’re invited because:

  • You’re aged between 35 and 60
  • You haven’t had a full cardiovascular check in the last 3 years
  • This check is part of a new national effort to reduce heart disease, particularly in those that may be at risk

You do not need to have any symptoms or known conditions — this is a proactive, preventive service.

What does the check involve?

Your appointment with our phlebotomist or nurse will include:

  • A blood pressure check
  • Height, weight and BMI calculation
  • A blood test for cholesterol and diabetes
  • Your smoking history

When your blood test results are back our Practice Nurse will phone you to:

  • Discuss your results and personalised heart health risk score
  • If your results are normal and your risk is low, we’ll simply offer you tips to stay well
  • If required we’ll offer lifestyle advice
  • If required we’ll offer you a cholesterol lowering medication (a statin)
  • If required we’ll offer you a blood pressure lowering medication

How do I book?

Simply phone the practice on 0131 333 3215 and ask to be booked for a ‘CVD’ or ‘heart health’ appointment with the nurse or phlebotomist.

Appointments for this service are limited so please respond as soon as you can.
