We offer Power of Attorney (PoA) assessments to support patients and families in planning for the future. This involves evaluating whether an individual has the mental capacity to understand and make decisions about appointing someone to manage their affairs.
During the assessment, one of our GPs will meet with the patient in a calm and supportive setting after reviewing their notes. We will ask questions to understand the patient’s awareness of their situation, their assets, and their ability to make informed choices about who they wish to appoint as their attorney. We will ensure the patient understands the nature and extent of the powers they are granting. We will speak to the patient in private and ensure the patient is not being pressured into granting the PoA and that they trust those people to which they are granting the powers. The conversation is respectful and confidential, with the aim of ensuring the patient’s rights and best interests are upheld.
If capacity is confirmed, we will complete the Schedule 1 Certificate of Capacity to accompany the Power of Attorney documentation.
If you would like to book a PoA assessment, please contact our reception team. This assessment is not covered by the NHS and will incur a charge.
We can carry out PoA assessments on patients registered at our practice living within Edinburgh or West Lothian including Kirkliston, Winchburgh, South Queensferry, Ratho Station, Newbridge and Abercorn.
